A legacy in writing! If it is possible to leave your legacy in writing, Soke Gozo Shioda did just that with this book. I reference it a lot when trying to explain the basic motion and theory of Aikido. The illustrations and pictures make easy to follow.

Fantastic. This is one of the greatest book written about Aikido. The techniques are shown in sequences and it covers everything from the basics to the advanced techniques of Aikido. Although the style taught is Yoshinkan, other schools will find it beneficial to their learning of Aikido techniques.

Terrific book that crams tons of info between the covers. Next to "Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere", by Westbrook and Ratti, this is by far the best book on Aikido that I have read yet. Clear, easy to follow pictures break the techniques down into understandable segments; also includes great section on how Japanese police officers use Aikido to defend themselves against knives and clubs!

Aikido for Kids, by Laura Santoro & Jennifer Corso
From the Amazon.com web site:
An excellent book for the younger child starting Aikido
Reviewer: Peter from Ohio November 5, 1999 This book covers the things that a younger child wants to know who is getting interested in Aikido and martial arts. The plentiful pictures both show the various stances and are motivating to the child who may think that he'll never be able to "get it." It is an excellent introductory book to the subject of "Aikido for kids."

Excellent! First of all, this book is the reason why I started aikido. It's just great! The pictures are excellent, and the explanations are very clear. You can actually learn from them! I learned sankajo long before I ever joined aikido. Not that this book is a substitute for good quality instruction, it's a pretty basic book, but it's as clear as books get.

Great book, gives good overview of the art Gozo Shioda was the founder of the Yoshinkan school of Aikido and studied for many years directly under Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido. This book gives the reader a good overview of the art, with easy to understand photo series that break the different techniques down into easily understood stages. I really like the photo series at the back of the book that demonstrate practical uses of Aikido for self-defense.

Gozo Shioda Sensei knows what he's talking about. This book explains basic techniques of Aikido as taught by the Yoshinkan Aikido organization, though it has something to teach to all Aikidoka. It includes very explanatory pictures of the techniques from varied points of view, so that the reader may actually get a good idea of the way a certain move is done and in which direction to apply his or her weight. I highly recommend it.

A Beginner's Guide to Aikido by Larry Reynosa and Joseph Billingiere

Excellent, encourages beginners. I loved this book because it was so encouraging and I could not believe that I was reading an interview with Steven Seagal, my hero. He pointed out that one should empty oneself like a cup and be humble in the dojo. I am taking Aikido and this is what I have tried to do.
Garry E. Howard from Brazil, Indiana, July 25, 1998
I found this book to be a must for all beginning aikidoka. I found A Beginner's Guide to Aikido to be most informative. It covers everything that a beginning aikido student needs to know. It is easy reading and has excellent information for future reference. I particularly enjoyed the comments by Aikido Masters Steven Seagal, Mitsunari Kanai and Mitsugi Saotome respectively. This text is recommended for my students' study.
