| Wearing The Hakama The following are meant to be Shuyokan guidelines for instructors who wish to wear the hakama during classes, seminars or demonstrations. These guidelines are not meant to supersede any existing Shuyokai (branch dojo) policies with regards to the sensei or the students wearing the hakama. At Shuyokan, the hakama is generally worn only by the Dojocho for teaching classes, formal testing, seminars or demonstrations. Other Shuyokan yudans are permitted to wear the hakama usually at demonstrations, seminars, formal testing, or during yudansha training. Usually no belt is worn either over or under the hakama. There are 7 folds in the hakama, 5 in front and 2 in back. These folds are said to have the following symbolic meanings:
When worn properly, the hakama will help the wearer develop a stronger center during the execution of the proper traditional and formal movements of the particular martial art system. The hakama is symbolic of each of the 7 folds and should be worn with honor and respect. |
