AIKIDO - the way of harmony
![]() Aiki is the principle of destroying an opponent's will to fight and is short for Aikido, Aikijujutsu or Aikijutsu. Aiki-Budo is any martial art that is practiced as a way of life and stresses the principle of Aiki. It is Aikijutsu practiced as a way of life. The Aikijujutsu of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of modern Aikido, was a blend of basic techniques from Daito-ryu Jujutsu. Jujutsu is hand to hand combat, with or without weapons, against an armed or unarmed opponent. Jutsu is an art, science or a technique rooted in the tradition of a Ryu (school or system). Aikido is a combination of many martial arts and has no form or patterns in the techniques, only the movements of heaven, earth and nature. Shuyokan Aikido is based upon the techniques of Yoshinkai Aikido. Aikido aims to eliminate aggression by blending to reduce and control conflict. By incorporating Tai-sabaki - evasive body movements - one can evade direct force and return it to the opponent. Along with the introduction of Ukemi (rolls and basic breakfalls) the students learn basic restraining moves designed to redirect the attack and control the attacker. |
